In ancient times i.e. during the time of Mahabharata, when Lord Shri Krishna's hands were hurt and blood started flowing from his hands, then Draupadi immediately tore her clothes and tied it on Krishna's hands and in return Shri Krishna gave her protection. During the partition of Bengal in 1905, Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore started celebrating Raksha Bandhan. He started this festival to maintain Hindu Muslim unity. However, we get information about Raksha Bandhan from the Mahabharata period itself.
